Palpitations are a common presentation to the urgent care or ED clinic. This like dizziness can actually mean a number of things. A very careful history is very improtant. In my practice I usually do a rhtyhm strip first to see if it is sinus. This blod shows that most cases are benign and may not represent any arrythmia. Often it is the sensation of heartbeat or missed beats with PVC or atrial ectopic beats. But there are a number of investigations that should be done in each case and often a referral. However it is often better for the GP to be making the referral.
