There was a webinar on March 25 on the topic of Maternal Sepsis that is invaluable for urgent care clinicians. Maternal sepsis can occur during pregnancy, childbirth or the postpartum period, and while we are not involved in routine pregnancy care, we do see pregnant women with infections, so it is important for us to recognise cases early and act accordingly. Infections during pregnancy, such as strep throat, pneumonia or UTI, as well as postpartum wound infections, can all lead to sepsis. This is the area of pregnancy care that we will likely intersect with patients, so being aware of maternal sepsis is vital for all urgent care clinicians.
The webinar was led by Dr Paul Huggan, Infectious Disease Specialist and Robyn McDougal, a rural midwife.
