Qualification:
John is a medical doctor who enthusiastically specialises in primary care. His clinical career has included work in large and small rural and urban general practices, as well as Urgent Care Centres and Hospital Emergency Departments in both Australia and New Zealand. His current role with Healius Medical & Dental Centres is to help establish the GP subspecialty of Urgent Care in Australia. This is not only for their large network of 70 (+) extended hours Integrated Primary Care Centres (IPCCs) but also for other willing participants through public-private partnerships with State Governments and working with Specialist Colleges and Universities. In conjunction with the RNZCUC, work is being done to establish a National Urgent Care Working Group, a Standard for Urgent Care Centres and post General Practice Fellowship Vocational Registration.
Through the privilege of leadership roles in successful IPCCs, John has developed a strong interest in primary health care leadership, service re-design and innovation. John’s current area of passion is integrating primary and secondary health care, especially in peri-urban disadvantaged communities. He is particularly interested in improving health care access for vulnerable children and acute care access for non-life-threatening urgent conditions. John is also committed to research and service innovation. He is currently completing his research PhD on the management of non-life-threatening urgent conditions in the community.
John also trained and worked as a Pastor, whilst practicing as an emergency & trauma registrar and country GP in South Australia. John also had a professional sporting career in basketball. Together, these life experiences have shaped his approach to community engagement and his values-based leadership style.
