2021 virtual Bootcamp success

As many of you will know, the 2021 virtual Bootcamp was a resounding success. Held in place of the in-person event planned for Christchurch, we had 20 presentations showing the dedication and enthusiasm of those working in urgent care, and the breadth of the discipline now and in the future. Our DPD Guy Melrose spent many hours planning the event, and is to be congratulated on how well the event went.

Also thanks to those behind the scenes - we had Finn (our IT support person) and Claire (College Administrator) coordinating the IT and administrative aspects of the day. The office received many emails of thanks and appreciation from the members, presenters, and executive committee.

The videos will be available very soon. They have been edited into their separate presentations, and are currently being loaded to the server with access via the website. They are free to view for those who attended on the day (or paid to subsequently view). Anyone else may still purchase tickets to view; this ticket will also get you access to the forthcoming webinars. We will make the videos freely available to members and those with educational subscription around May next year.

UCPEX

We're proceeding with plans, but keeping a very close eye on how the lockdown progresses. When the examination committee make decisions on the holding and format of exams (including we continue as planned), we will inform those who have registered for UCPEX by email.

We've invited registrars (those eligible to attend, and those who must attend) to confirm attendance or not. If you cannot find this invitation, please email alex@rnzcuc.org.nz.

Medical Deans’ 2021 Annual Conference

Our upcoming online Annual Conference will draw on the ideas presented in this Discussion Paper and the experiences of overseas colleagues and from across the medical training and healthcare sectors.
  • In the first session, on Thursday 7 October, we will hear the experiences of our guests from Harvard Medical School, UK Medical Schools Council, and Health Education England, and their responses to the COVID pandemic and how it is impacting their work and future reform plans.
  • Our second session, on Friday 8 October, will look at the development of our future medical workforce, hearing from our Keynote Speaker, Jim Campbell, Director of Health Workforce at the World Health Organisation, about how as a sector, we can learn from the innovations brought about as a result of COVID-19 and work together to develop the doctors we need and provide the support they need.
Two future sessions – on preparing for and transitioning into practice, and factors impacting career choices of doctors in training – will be held in Nov (dates and times to be confirmed shortly).
The Conference Program and registration is available at https://medicaldeans.org.au/home/annual-conference/ and we do hope you will be able to join us

Seeking participants to investigate racial bias amongst New Zealand registered health workers and clinical students

We've been asked to share a study looking at racial bias in health workers and practitioners.

The study requires you to complete the Go/No-Go association task and answer questions about your explicit attitudes towards Māori and NZ Europeans.

This should take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete, and participants can choose to go in the draw to win one of 10 $50 Westfield or grocery vouchers.

Details entered for the draw will only be accessible by our research team, and the study will be anonymous. to complete the survey or find out more click here

MCNZ Statement on - What to do when you have concerns about another doctor

The Medical Council are reviewing Their statement on What to do when you have concerns about another doctor and would value your feedback.

This statement discusses concerns that could arise about another doctor for example, health, conduct and competence. It also discusses appropriate options for raising these concerns including when we as a regulator should be notified.

Their draft statement has more emphasis on patient safety and maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in the medical profession as grounds to act on concerns about another doctor.
