The Practical Skills Weekend
The Practical Skills Weekend is held every year in August at the Columbia Centre Ponsonby.
The 2017 Practical Skills Weekend was on the 5th and 6th August again at the Columbia Centre. For me it is the highlight of the Urgent Care Course. This year saw us having the new Ophthalmology presentation from Simon Dean as well as the usual great presenters- Janus Schaumkel for knee , Maurice Toes for ankle, Mandy Gumbley and Odele Stuart for hand therapy and hand splinting, myself David Sorrell presenting wound management, Peter Poon for Shoulders, Garsing Wong on Suturing techniques, Matt Wright for X-ray interpretation and Introducing Johnathan Heather for Burns.
We trialed a new projector this year which was particularly great for reviewing Matt’s x-ray session.
Adrian the new GM was the backbone of the event hosting his first of hopefully many in the future. This year there were 44 Trainees. From all over New Zealand and in many varied workplaces from the Urgent Care Clinic, to the hospital Emergency Department.
This weekend is a vital part of the training and one of the few times that we get a number of Fellows together to teach Trainees at the same time. I personally have been a speaker for a number of years now and this is the second time I have been able to sit in on virtually all the sessions. I look forward to next year already.

I would like to particularly thank the organising team of Adrian, Alex, Hadi and our helpers Natalia and Ella. Next year we are looking at making some changes.
